Dozens of other companies, including such giants as NEC, Samsung, Sony and ViewSonic, will continue to offer 21-inch and other displays that work with your G4. But no device has been announced yet, and when and if one appears, it probably won't be inexpensive, because it will have to include a power supply.īesides, the new lineup doesn't include a 21-inch monitor, and the 22-inch Apple Cinema Display costs a staggering $3,999.īut if you can't find a 21-inch display or you're not quite ready to buy, don't panic. That may change: Apple says it is open to talking to companies that might want to design an adapter that would make the new displays usable on older Macs (or even PCs, I suppose). Because the monitors have no other way to get power, and earlier computers and video cards don't have ADC connectors, there's no way to mix the old with the new. It carries not only video signals, but also electric power to the display and data to and from the two-port USB hubs built into the monitors' bases. The reason is that the monitors use a new Apple-invented port and cable called the Apple Display Connector, or ADC.
